About
Josef Lamell is an Austrian-American clarinetist and arranger, active internationally and known for his versatility as both a chamber musician and soloist. Born in Houston, Texas in 1994, his extensive education includes a Master of Music from Indiana University, a Master of Arts from the Universität für Musik und Kunst Wien, a Bachelor of Music from the University of Houston, and a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Houston. Josef's diverse training reflects his commitment to artistic flexibility, having studied under renowned musicians such as Reinhard Wieser, Boris Allakhverdyan, James Campbell, Luis Rossi, Randall Griffin, Thomas LeGrand, and Chester Rowell.
As a solist, Josef has performed at festivals in the United States, Belgium, France, Italy, and Israel. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with distinguished artists such as Roby Lakatos, Marc Matthys, Dirk Brossé, Andreas Helm, Gaby Pas van Riet, and Bram Nolf, and performed with orchestras in both the United States and Belgium. In 2023, he presented the Vienna premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s Figura for solo clarinet, piano, and string quartet in cooperation with WienModern.
Josef's chamber music career centers around the Duo Lamell-Matthys where he performs alongside Belgian pianist Nathalie Matthys. Together, they have appeared at festivals and concerts across Belgium and Austria. In addition to his performance schedule, Josef is dedicated to organizing concerts, collaborating with organizations in Vienna such as the Kunst- und Kulturverein Take5 and the Lateinamerikanische Akademische Kulturzentrum (LAK). His orchestral experience includes serving as principal clarinetist of the Santa Monica Symphony from 2017 to 2018 and performing with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Houston Symphony, as well as collaborating with the American Youth Symphony.
A passionate arranger, Josef brings his wide-ranging interests into his work, transcribing repertoire from early Baroque to contemporary, from classical to jazz crossover. His arrangements aim to present diverse, engaging repertoire to audiences while providing clarinetists with easy access to quality material for performance, showcasing his commitment to both the clarinet and the broader musical community.

Teaching
Josef is a passionate teacher, experienced in working with students of all levels and ages. His pedagogy draws on study with internationally-renowned clarinet-educators such as Howard Klug, James Campbell, Reinhard Wieser, and Randall Griffin, but also stretches far beyond traditional clarinet training. Josef leverages his broad educational experience by integrating musicology, music theory, and historically-informed performance practice as well as interdisciplinary insights into a wholistic, analytical teaching approach catered to the interests and needs of each individual student.
Lessons are possible online or in-person (in Vienna, Austria). Individual lesson pricing is €60/hour, subject to adjustment according to necessary travel time or special circumstances.

Arrangement
Josef has transcribed and arranged more than 60 pieces for clarinet. These arrangements are intended for clarinetists of various levels and include instrumentations ranging from advanced solo clarinet, to mixed-instrument ensembles, to full clarinet choir.
